We're a tiny team and a huge community.
Here's a little snapshot of the people that make thighs happen, starting with the current Organisers of All Things a.k.a 'Directors' if we want to sound grown up.

Over the last 5 years, without any planning or intention, Thighs of Steel has grown from a small idea to being the biggest part of my life. Other than freewheeling, what’s kept me hooked on this project is the impact that a collection of individuals can have en masse.
Together, a load of not-so-serious cyclists have raised over half a million pounds and I reckon that’s pretty cool. By volunteering with Khora for 6 months, I’ve been able to see the effect that fundraised money has on the project, and has fuelled the motivation to keep this going and growing. |
I joined for the first cycle in 2016 and just keep comin’ back for more!
Now I'm also part of the organising team, which is a lot of fun. It’s an amazing feeling watching spreadsheets morph into adventure. When I started out 5 years ago it was with a serious aversion to lycra. I must admit, I've been turned! I love cycling because you really experience your surroundings and the magic of getting somewhere under your own power never goes away. |
On my first tour in 2009 I knew so little about bikes that, when the brakes failed on Day One, I taped them together. After tens of thousands of miles riding through sixteen countries - and many hours volunteering as a bike mechanic - I'm now an adequately-tooled bike adventurer dude!
I fell in love with Thighs on the 2018 ride, when I got heat-stroke in Hungary and thought I was going to die. My favourite touring speed is chilling and chatting. I'm a huge fan of wild swims and spreading butter on corn chips. |
I have been a keen bean cyclist since I was 19 and found myself cycling the length of America, sort of by accident! Since then I have explored much of Scotland, Wales and New Zealand with my trusty Raleigh Capri (called ‘Sunny’). I first got involved volunteering with refugee and asylum seeker communities while studying Arabic in Jordan in 2016, at the height of the crisis. I now work with refugee and asylum seeker communities in Glasgow and as the Thighs of Steel Adventure Inventor! |
Somehow finding a love for bike touring huddled under a builders tarpaulin in a ditch between Edinburgh and the English border, I’ve since slept in many better places, and a few worse. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger eh! It was seeing friends riding it that introduced me to the magnificence that is Thighs of Steel, and since 2019 have been helping out with marketing and communications alongside volunteering at Khora in Athens. |
Last but not least, the most popular of the team!
In her search for a meaningful life, she joined this cycle on its maiden voyage and has stuck with it ever since. She's been towed out of Italian ditches, had her roof rack temporarily removed by a low French bridge, and has conquered the Alps three times. She provides electricity for the occasional phone charge, has 16 compartments for cyclist's stuff, has a kitchen, and will be your knight in rusted armour if you need to be picked up during the ride. |
