This is the one for people who can’t commit to a mega tour, but still want to help make Refugees Welcome.

Starting around noon, we’ll ride the final 38km all together, from Wye in the Kent Downs to the official Guinness World Record finish line in Dover.

This ride is Pay What You Feel and there’s no limit to the number of people – so bring your friends.

The more people we have riding together, the more noise we’ll make, the more donations we’ll raise and the bigger difference we’ll make. Let’s do this!

GREAT! HOW MUCH WILL IT BE?!
This day ride is PAY AS YOU FEEL!

We don't want cost to be a barrier for anyone joining us on the final stretch. Obviously the snacks, van power and team power that we put into this ride does cost money, so if you do have a few coins to send our way - that'd be fantastic. But if not - that's cool too!

Ride with us, make some noise and let's raise as much as we can for Choose Love.

NOTE: Fundraising is a separate thing. Scroll down to find out more about that...

Saturday 18 September @ 11.00 // We’ll meet at Wye Station in the heart of the Kent Downs. We’ll say our hellos and you’ll get to pack your spare kit into Calypso, our support van. There will be snacks.

Around 12ish // We set off for Dover! Depending on how many people show up, we might break into smaller groups to stay safe. The vibe will be totally groovy, so speed demons put your brakes on – we’ll ride at the pace of the slowest.

Over the next 5 hours… // We ride a beautiful route through the hills, before hitting the coast at Folkestone. There’s about 500m of climbing, so don’t expect a total picnic – but go at your own pace up the hills and remember that getting off and pushing is always an option. After all that climbing, we’ve earned a beautiful long descent into Dover.

Around 5ish // We arrive at the Guinness World Record finish line! Hopefully, we’ll have joined up with the Keen Crew riding the whole of the Final E, so that we can cross the line all together.

This is it – the end of a 2,400km, record-breaking message of refugee solidarity. After local dignitaries have officially witnessed our arrival, we’ll probably have a fairly emotional celebration before heading back home for a shower.

* NB: All the above details are loosely collated from our route planning, the internet and our imagination. What we do know for sure is that this is a real adventure and that plans and itineraries mock you in retrospect.

By joining Spell It Out, you’re committing to fundraising for Choose Love.

There's no minimum fundraising target, but last year average Thighs fundraising was £518 per person. Every penny counts, so just do what you can. Collectively, we're aiming to raise £100,00
.

All the money you raise will go to two kinds of organisation, both of which work hard to offer refugees the welcome that our government withholds:
  • Legal support organisations that guide people through the complicated asylum system so that they can escape 'squalid' refugee camps around the world
  • UK-based organisations that offer refugees the tools they might need as they start to rebuild their lives in this country, including vocational training, language lessons and psychological support

We're confident you won't find it too tough to fundraise, but to give you a head start here's a load of ideas and tips from Thighs cyclists who've fundraised gazillions in the past. We're always around to help you come up with new ideas as well - drop us a line if you’re worried.

ONE TOUR NOT ENOUGH?
After one tour, most people are seeing showers as mirages on the horizon and are shuddering at the sight of a bicycle, but not you. You’re craving adventure and you will not be stopped after one measly tour!

That's GREAT. The only thing we'd say is that we can't afford to offer a discount if you do multiple rides with us - you'll have to pay the entry fee for each one. We'd also gently suggest that the more tours you do, the more ambitious you should be with your fundraising. Awesome!
WHAT WILL I NEED TO BRING?!
What on earth do you bring on this trip!? Don't panic - we have a full kit list for you here.

ESSENTIALS
  • Bike in working order, with a decent range of gears
  • Helmet
  • 2x inner tubes for fixing punctures
  • 2x water bottles
  • Waterproof layer
  • Some sort of bag fixed to your bike. This doesn't have to be massive, but big enough to carry lunch, inner tubes and waterproofs
  • If there are any overnight stays on your tour, then please bring your own tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat and torch - sadly, due to Covid, we can't share :(

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
  • Cycling shorts to protect sensitive bits on long rides
  • Battery pack for your phone. We have charging points in the van, but they often get overloaded!

We're fans of doing things as cheaply and greenly as possible, so there's not much on our 'essentials' list and we really recommend asking buddies and pals to borrow bits and bobs to save on buying new!
CAN I COME ALONE / WITH FRIENDS?
Yes and yes!

Most people on our tours come on their own and we LOVE them. We know it can be a bit scary coming alone, but the vibe is totally collaborative and you might be surprised how quickly you get sucked into the tight-knit biking community that we'll build together.

We also get a lot of people who come with a friend or family member and that's totally cool. It's great to know you've got a buddy by your side and friends on previous tours have had phenomenal success by teaming up to fundraise as well.

The one thing we would say about coming with friends is that (on the multi-day tours) you might not be riding with them every day. We won't split you up on Day 1 (unless you want to be!), but we do try our best to make sure that everyone rides with everyone else and that might mean you and your pal are in different groups for some of the time.

Cycling is a great way to make awesome new friends so embrace the stranger danger!
WHAT ABOUT COVID?
According to the data, outdoor activities are relatively safe compared to, say, choir practice in a broom cupboard. But we will still be taking precautions against Covid, in line with NHS advice. Extra cleaning of shared equipment, for example. Normally we would also provide things like tents - but this year we are asking you to bring your own.

We don't expect any drastic changes to the World Record Relay plan - the government would have to roll back the rules to an almost full lockdown before cycling and camping are forbidden - but we have made our own risk assessment and have contingencies in place for several depressing scenarios. Fingers crossed we don't have to use any of them!

BOTTOM LINE: If the World Record Relay has to be cancelled, you will be offered a full refund.
WORLD RECORD???!
This is not your usual bike tour - it's part of an official Guinness World Record attempt. This comes with a variety of fun admin that we have to do to prove that we're actually doing what we say we're doing.

We would LOVE for you to get involved. This could mean:
  • Taking photos or video of the team at notable landmarks
  • Finding witnesses to sign the world record logbook
  • Carrying the official world record breaking GPS

We genuinely think that this admin will add a fun 'treasure hunt' element to the ride, but we would also ask for your patience because it might also mean chasing around a random village looking for a lawyer to witness our logbook or stopping in the rain to take photos at a war memorial.

On the plus side... WORLD FREAKIN' RECORD!!!
