Week Four is for those who are not fans of hills but who can pedal through the kms!
This week has no major ups nor downs, but pretty much constantly undulates through an average of 140km a day.
Expect flat plains, and hopefully some rivers, lakes, coniferous forests, lush meadows and probably people chopping wood (as well as other stereotypical forest-related antics).
There are plenty of miles to get through, a Hungarian pastry culture to discover (cukrászda means bakery!), and who knows what other curiosities to take in along the way.
We'll roll our way through the rural countryside of Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary and Romania in a veritable tour of the East.
We'll start off by following Slovenia's Sava river through the Central Sava Valley, then into Croatia where we will spend a day cycling and hopefully make it across the border to Hungary before we rest our weary bodies. In Hungary we'll pass the famous Heviz thermal lake and then skirt around the top of Lake Balaton, perfect for some pre-, mid- and post-cycle swimming!
From Lake Balaton we'll follow the Danube for a while along the Eurovelo route 6, all the way to Baja. Then we head towards Szeged, a town that has been at the forefront of the refugee crisis. We're hoping to connect with some organisations here and learn more about the local situation.
Our final day of riding takes us into our fourth country of the week, Romania, and on to Timişoara for some well-deserved limb stretches and celebrations!
*Plans may change and daily distances may vary as we scout for camping spots along the way. Take the below with a pinch of salt and a slurp of energy gel.
We’re available for airport pick-ups throughout the day. Then we’ll all come together in the evening for dinner and a chat about the week to come.
Cycle about 130km to the Croatian border and hopefully camp in the Kosjanski National Park.
Cycle into Croatia and out the other side again.
Cycle about 130km to lake Balaton where we will hopefully wild camp.
Cycle really far around the lake and head towards the Danube.
Cycle really far and wild camp just before Szeged.
Cycle over the border to Romania for the home stretch, where we’ll triumphantly stretch our legs in Timişoara!
Wake up, a mixture of tired and elated, wander around the city in a happy daze. We’re available for airport drops throughout the day.
The standard cost to take part is £385 per week.
We are also providing 5 discounted places, at £250 per week. These places are intended for refugees and long-term volunteers working in the refugee crisis. If this is you then get in touch here to apply. NB. Our fully-funded 2 free places are now taken.
